3 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Share a Toothbrush

3 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Share a ToothbrushEven though you may be grossed out by the idea, there are times when you're left with no choice. Forgetting to pack your brush for an overnight stay or accidentally swapping brushes with someone else often results in sharing toothbrushes.

Even if you take good care of your oral hygiene, sharing toothbrushes isn't really a good idea and here's why:

Bacterial Growth

When you share your toothbrush with a partner or a friend, the amount of bacteria on the toothbrush increases. You see, most toothbrushes play host to a bacteria called beta-hemolytic streptococcus, which causes you to get sick and experience symptoms like sore throat, cough, inflamed lymph nodes and fever.

Reduced Brush Lifecycle

Ideally, you are recommended to brush twice daily and if two people use the same toothbrush, it will break down faster. Even though this may not seem like a problem at first, inconsistent bristles can scratch your gums and eventually lead to receding gums.

Infections

Toothbrushes carry disease-causing bacteria and viruses. If the person you shared a toothbrush with was suffering from fever blisters, you will have a high chance of landing a periodontal disease or oral herpes. Also, if your gums were to bleed in the process, you will have put yourself at high risk of landing communicable diseases such as hepatitis and HIV.

The Final Word

Sharing toothbrushes make you vulnerable against a long list of hygiene problems because of the bacteria and food particles that you can't spot with your naked eye. If you've used someone else's toothbrush, get hold of a strong mouthwash and rinse properly.
