Lighter Fillings Can Blend in with the Natural Color of Your Teeth

While most people do not appreciate the news that they have a cavity, we do have good news for you as it relates to the options of how we can treat it. Traditionally an amalgam filling, or silver filling, was used to treat cavities. Amalgam fillings contain a mixture of metals. This type of filling has consistently been the least expensive type of filling with the greatest durability. However, some people do not prefer this type of filling. They may not want to have different metals existing in their mouth. In addition, amalgam fillings are dark in color, and they really stand out when you yawn!
Options for Filling a Cavity with a Lighter Color Filling
Composite fillings are lighter fillings. They can blend in with the natural color of your teeth. For that reason alone, many people choose composite fillings over amalgam fillings.
Composite fillings are made from a combination of acrylic and ceramic resins. This type of filling chemically bonds with the tooth. These fillings can last an average of seven years, but they may last longer in patients who have good oral hygiene.
It is important to check with your insurance company to see what kind of fillings they will cover. Often, we see amalgam fillings covered at a higher rate than composite fillings. However, if you want a lighter filling that will blend in with the natural color of your teeth, we suggest a composite filling even if it costs you more money. The cosmetic benefit only goes up if you need more than one filling.
