Why You Should Contact Us When a Toothache First Shows Up

Tooth discomfort and swelling around a tooth are typical symptoms of a toothache. It is best to come into our office as soon as you detect a toothache so we can help assess your condition and get you going on a treatment plan. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen as your toothache could be an indicator of a bigger problem.
Tooth Decay
A variety of causes can be behind a toothache. They can be a result of tooth decay. This is the damage incurred by plaque turning sugars into acids. If the plaque builds up it can penetrate the enamel and cause problems like cavities and gum disease. Patients describe the sensation of tooth decay as either an occasional sharp feeling or continuous discomfort that may keep you awake.
Broken Teeth
If a tooth is broken, it may cause a toothache. It is important to contact us right away if you think your tooth is broken so we help keep bacteria from collecting at the site and ward off infection.
Fillings and Gum Problems
A damaged filling may cause your tooth to be uncomfortable. We would want to see you immediately so we can remove and replace the broken or loose filling. Avoiding this appointment could lead to more severe problems in and around the damaged filling.
Issues with your gums may cause toothaches. If your gums are infected, you could have a toothache. However, if you know a tooth is erupting or you recently had a tooth extracted you may have only a temporary tooth ache.
Bruxism
Lastly, toothaches can be the result of grinding or clenching your teeth. These repetitive motions can wear down your teeth. Chewing gum for too long could also cause a toothache.
Since there are many reasons why you may have a toothache, it is best to come into our office for an exam to determine the cause. We can help you feel better and give you advice on how to avoid toothaches in the future.
