In the traditional treatment of advanced periodontal (gum) disease the surgeon uses a scalpel to remove the diseased tissue. The tissue is then reflected from the tooth roots and bone. The tooth roots are cleaned, the bone reshaped and bone graft added if needed. The gum is then sutured back in place. This procedure is called ENAP which is an acronym for Excisional New Attachment Procedure. This particular surgery has a long and uncomfortable healing time due to its invasive nature. LANAP or Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure is quite different and minimally invasive in treatment of advanced periodontal disease.Light energy is used to selectively remove the diseased tissue instead of a scalpel. The gum tissue is not peeled back from the teeth and bone. Bone grafts are not needed as patients regenerate their own bone. This can save significant expense for the patient. This minimally invasive technique causes little bleeding. No stitches are used and healing time and discomfort are significantly reduced.
