Meaning of Mouth guards

Posted on 10/24/2022 by Advanced Dental Associates
Meaning of Mouth guardsA mouth guard is a dental device that protects your teeth by covering them. Mouth guards safeguard your teeth, gums, cheeks, and tongue against trauma caused by teeth grinding or sports. A mouthguard may be necessary for both children and adults.

They may be recommended if one participates in a contact sport such as basketball, soccer, hockey, or football which increases the danger of a facial hit. It can also be used by people with bruxism. Participants in noncontact activities that have a high danger of falling, such as biking or gymnastics can also use the device.

Types of mouthguards

There are many types of mouthguards such as Boil-and-bite mouth guards. They are made of a thermoplastic substance that you may mold at home to fit your teeth.

It's placed in hot water which is fairly warm to soften it. Next, place the softened mouthguard in your mouth and leave it for a while until it feels comfortable. The gadget is then removed and rinsed with cool water.

Another one is stock which is a one-size-fits-all mouth guard that is preformed and ready to use.

Purpose of wearing a mouth guard

The goal is to prevent or reduce trauma to the teeth, lips, jaws, and gingival tissue. It can be costly and painful to repair or replace missing teeth. Wearing a mouthguard while exercising can help you avoid losing your teeth. It's also beneficial if a tooth has suffered nerve damage.

How long can a mouth guard last?

A custom-fitted mouthguard can last several years with proper care, depending on how frequently you use it and how much "tear and wear" it receives. In other cases, people may require a mouthguard replacement more frequently.

It is important to take your mouth guard to your dentist for a check-up in terms of having cracks or other signs of wear. Contact us today for more information.
